city_of_words.jpg WHAT I DO

I provide the following services for a variety of clients...

Feature writing
My freelance writing portfolio is extensive and subjects covered include everything from gardening to food, opera to science, writing to politics. I have a view of stories - that they should be about things that happen and have a beginning, middle and end - that makes for pieces that are as informative as they are readable. See Words on Paper section.

Ghost writing
This is an increasingly large part of my portfolio - see Books section. Ghost writing is a highly specialised form of writing and I enjoy its special character very much. Although my subjects have been well-known New Zealanders I am intereseted in the challenge of writing for people with lower profiles.

Magazine concepts
For contract or general publishers wanting to launch magazines, I can provide a full concept plan with outline of content that will meet their needs and those of the target readership, and work within a budget. I can oversee its implementation to any stage required. In the past,  I have conceived and created magazines for a bank, a health insurer, a travel agency and an airline, among others.

Magazine consulting
Many small publishers are producing good magazines that could be great ones. I offer advice on all aspects of production and editorial content. This can then be put in place by an existing team, possibly under my direction. This is a good chance for a publisher to get their magazine scrutinised by an  experienced eye. A comprehensive written critique is available and the cost can be offset against future editorial consulting.

Media releases
A well-written, concise release that gets a client's message across with impact is all too rare. I am often asked by organisations to prepare material for them to complement that from their regular PR supplier.

Sub-editing
I trained in this discipline, working as chief sub-editor at the Australian Women's Weekly in Sydney when it sold 1.25 million copies per issue. It is my basic journalistic craft. Often under-rated, good subbing provides the crucial difference betwen a so-so magazine and one that raises its head above the pack. Working remotely or on location, I can provide copy editing services as well as sharp and attention-getting headings, intros and captions for all kinds of publications.

Travel writing
I have been a regular contributor to Kia Ora, the Air New Zealand inflight magazine, since 2004. I have also built up a "mental database" of destinations that I have visited on all continents, many of which I have not yet written about.
